In Guinea, we proudly support the Humanisme San Frontière orphanage, located in the capital city of Conakry. This orphanage is dedicated to providing quality education for every child in its care. During the 2024-2025 school year, Education for Every Child assisted 17 students across all education levels—ranging from elementary to high school—by providing tuition support and school supplies.
Why is this support so crucial in Guinea?
As of 2021, Guinea’s adult literacy rate was approximately 45%. Access to education remains a significant challenge, especially in rural areas, where many children face obstacles that prevent them from attending school. According to UNESCO, the net enrollment rate for primary education in Guinea was just 67.3% in 2018. Factors such as poverty, long distances to schools, and cultural barriers all contribute to these low enrollment rates, particularly among girls and children from marginalized communities.
Gender disparities in education continue to be a major issue, with girls facing unique challenges that hinder both enrollment and retention. Early marriage, household duties, and entrenched cultural norms all contribute to lower enrollment rates and higher dropout rates for girls. Humanisme Sans Frontiere is committed to providing an education to every child it supports, regardless of gender, ensuring that both girls and boys receive equal opportunities to learn and thrive.
Located in East Africa, Uganda has made considerable progress in improving access to primary and secondary education in recent decades. However, despite these advances, significant challenges remain that affect the quality and inclusivity of the education system.
Access to Education
Access to education has improved in Uganda through government policies aimed at increasing enrollment rates. The Universal Primary Education (UPE) program, introduced in 1997, eliminated primary school fees, resulting in a notable rise in primary school enrollment. According to UNESCO, Uganda’s gross enrollment ratio for primary education reached 91% in 2018. Additionally, the government launched the Universal Secondary Education (USE) program, which provides tuition-free education in government-funded secondary schools.
Despite this progress, gender disparities in education persist, particularly in rural areas. Although efforts have been made to promote gender equality, girls still face significant barriers to accessing and completing education. Factors such as early marriage, household responsibilities, and cultural norms contribute to lower enrollment and higher dropout rates for girls. According to UNICEF, the net enrollment ratio for girls in primary education was 88% in 2018, compared to 92% for boys.
Supporting Girls’ Education
To address this gender gap, Education for Every Child offers a scholarship program in Uganda focused on supporting girls' education. We currently provide one scholarship to a female university student, covering her school fees as well as a food allowance to help combat food insecurity.
